I am a female African American physician who was born in Detroit, Michigan. My grandparents were a part of the great migration from Georgia and Tennessee. I have 7 sisters, who still reside in Michigan. I graduated from Cass Technical High school in Detroit. I attended the University of Michigan for my undergraduate education. I graduated from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. I came to Cleveland in 1979 to do a residency in Diagnostic Radiology. I am still practicing medicine in Cleveland.
I am an empathetic person. My father was an educator and minister. I think I “inherited” from him and his passion for missionary work, a passion for justice and fairness. I want justice to be served for all of mankind.
In February of this year (2024), I realized the extent of the “information gap” surrounding preventing sickle cell by using fertility techniques. This information to prevent hereditary diseases has been around for decades yet few people are aware that this is an option. I think at risk families have a right to know. To keep this option under wraps is a miscarriage of justice. I, nor does any of my family have sickle cell, but I am outraged for those who do have the trait/disease and have not been provided with information about all of their options.
Goal: Educate the public and health care providers about ALL of the options to prevent having a child with Sickle Cell Disease.
